SUMMARY:Adding Hype to Cyanotype!
DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nAre you curious about cyanotype and wondering what you can do with this magical medium? \nIn this workshop you will not only learn the basics of preparing\, exposing and developing your own cyanotypes\, but how to take them several steps further through toning\, bleaching\, and multiple exposures. \nDuring the first day of the workshop\, you’ll prepare cyanotype solution before applying it to paper\, and then expose your imagery using both the sun and exposure unit equipment to create several of your own prints. \nThen\, using dye baths and registration strategies for multiple exposures\, you’ll move beyond the quintessential cyanotype blue to achieve rich browns\, reds\, yellows\, and even some colour combinations on the same print! \nParticipants will gain the know-how and confidence to continue their cyanotype journey both at home or in a studio environment. \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nAn overview of the process’s origins and how it works\nPreparing cyanotype solution \nApplying cyanotype solution to paper\nVarious exposure techniques using both photographic negatives and other materials for image-development\nDeveloping the exposed image\nToning exposed cyanotype images to produce different colours\nDouble exposures and considerations for image-registration\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nTracy Wormsbecker (she/her) is an arts administrator and printmaker living in Mohkinstsis/Calgary. She earned her BFA in printmaking from the University of Calgary\, where she began experimenting with non-digital methods of printing and hasn’t stopped since. \nTracy wears many hats and spends her time maintaining a casual arts practice\, working as the Executive Director of A/P\, chasing after her two adorable children (and more recently\, a new puppy)\, and making artwork when she finds the time.\n \n\nWorkshop Fee\n$135.00* prices not subject to GST \n*Access to using the A/P studio equipment\, including as a workshop participant\, requires an A/P membership. SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Opening Reception with Anna Gaby-Trotz
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Opening Reception to celebrate Baseline by Anna Gaby-Trotz\nAnna Gaby-Trotz will be in attendance\, and will be providing an in-person artist talk during this opening reception to celebrate her exhibition: Baseline. \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nThe Artist Talk will begin at 7pm\, followed by the reception until 9pm. \nThis event is FREE and all are welcome. \n\nAbout the Exhibition:\nShifting baseline syndrome is an acclimatization to one’s surroundings. In 1995\, Daniel Pauly used this term to reference fisheries and the environment. In regards to climate change\, it means that each generation adapts to its current environment and defines a new baseline. As extreme weather\, fires\, floods and droughts become commonplace\, forthcoming generations will know this as the reality and may have little understanding that the world was and could be different. \nThis installation features a collection of images gathered while examining the changing climate through the North West Passage. These waters – situated between Kugluktuk\, Nunavut and Greenland – have a deep history of colonial conquest and now\, once impassable due to ice\, are open to commercial passage\, mining of resources\, and military access.  \nOver a decade has passed since this journey\, and the situation has only worsened. The Arctic is melting twice as fast as anywhere else on the planet\, which has an immense impact on the communities and ecosystems that rely on this land and water. As I travelled through this landscape\, I was struck by the lack of ice.  Days passed\, and the water was still open. Then the first iceberg floated onto the horizon. It was almost the size of our ship. How long did it last before being absorbed into the ocean? Will future generations know a diverse environment with sea and glacial ice? How is the opening up of this once closed passage going to change our world?  \nBaseline is an attempt to shift this narrative: to challenge us to change\, to listen\, to act. \nI would like to acknowledge that the lands depicted in these images are not my home. This land and water belong to the Inuit people of Canada and Greenland. I am grateful to have been welcomed into their homelands and acknowledge the problematic nature of being a settler within this space. Climate change impacts us all\, but not all equally. \nAnna Gaby-Trotz (she/her) is a printmaker and photographer whose work critically explores social issues\, identity\, and the natural environment. With an MFA in Printmaking from The University of Alberta\, her practice centers on the transformative power of art\, particularly in creating inclusive spaces for marginalized communities. Anna has worked on significant community projects\, such as Be Our Ally with Sheatre\, addressing homophobia among rural youth. She also founded The Queer Print Project at The University of Guelph\, where she teaches screen printing and fosters a supportive\, creative environment for queer artists.  \nFrom 2015 to 2021\, Anna served as Technical Director at Open Studio in Toronto\, where she initiated a North/South Printmaking Residency with The West Baffin Cooperative and has overseen numerous creative projects with national and international artists. Anna’s work Baseline was shown at Open Studio in Toronto. Her recent collaboration with Richelle Forsey\, The Landscape is Dead was featured at the CAFKA25 Biennale. Anna co-curated the show Queer Print Project: Body Language at the Art Gallery of Guelph. Her work is in collections including The University of Alberta\, The Edmonton Arts Council and Open Studio. Anna has taught at The University of Alberta\, The Ontario College of Art and Design University and is currently an Assistant Professor in Studio Art at The University of Guelph. \n\nVisitor Information:\nNew to the A/P space? Welcome! \nHere’s a helpful guide to visiting the A/P Gallery\, Studio\, and Events \n  \nHours and Location: \nA/P Main Gallery Hours: Wednesday from 10am – 5pm; Thursday – Saturday from 10am – 5pm (closed Sunday\, Monday\, and Tuesday) \n  \nAccessibility:  \nA/P is located near the 39th Ave. C-Train Station and has free parking stalls located in front of the building\, as well as street parking nearby. \nThere is an access ramp at the east end of the building (near the Hitch Shop)\, and A/P is equipped with an accessible gender neutral washroom. \nWe do our best to accommodate the needs of our visitors whenever possible. \nWe welcome your questions and are committed to working with our members and guests to have a great visit when you are here! \n\n  \nInclusivity and code of conduct: \nA/P’s cultivates an inclusive and collaborative environment to learn about printmaking\, to create printed works\, and to pursue exciting artistic opportunities. \nA/P operates by a code of conduct with an expectation of promoting dignity and respect to all\, and we prioritize individual and community safety.  Any form discriminatory behaviour\, intimidation\, bullying\, harassment or victimization is not tolerated.

SUMMARY:Printmaking Sampler
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about the world of printmaking? \nIf you want to give it a go but have no idea where to start\, this workshop is for you! You will get a hands-on taste of FOUR unique techniques\, including screen printing\, drypoint\, linocut\, and typesetting on a Nolan Proof Press.  Come away with four unique prints! This course is a perfect choice for those beginning in print or want to dabble in different techniques as a lead-up for taking further courses that Alberta Printmakers offers.  \nThis workshop is for folks who are 18 years of age or older.  \nNo experience necessary and all supplies are provided.  \n  \nWhat is printmaking? \nPrintmaking includes a range of processes where ink is transferred from one surface (a matrix) to another (the substrate) to create an image. There are several printmaking techniques\, including silkscreen\, relief\, etching\, relief\, letterpress\, and lithography.  \nPrintmaking has been used for both artistic and commercial purposes for hundreds of years (books\, illustrations\, artworks\, newspapers\, posters\, textiles\, etc)\, and it continues to be a popular and versatile medium for artists who print on various surfaces\, such as paper\, fabric\, wood\, and metal. \n  \nAbout each technique that you’ll learn in this sampler:  \nDrypoint is a process where a sharp\, pointed tool is used to scratch a design into the surface of a matrix (often a copper or plexiglass plate). Ink is then applied to the plate and wiped off so that it remains only in the grooves before transferring the ink onto paper using a printing press that applies substantial pressure.  \nParticipants will create\, ink\, and print their own 4”x6” plexiglass drypoint plate.  \nTypesetting: before digital applications like Microsoft Word or InDesign\, compositions of text (as well as symbols\, fancy decorative ornaments\, and illustrations) were manually arranged and ‘set’ by placing movable physical pieces of ‘type’ onto a letterpress machine. The surface of the composed form is then inked and transferred onto paper.  \nParticipants will work in small groups to compose a line of text using wood type before printing the text using a Nolan Proof Press multiple times.  \nSilkscreen is a process where ink is pressed through the openings of a fine fabric mesh (the screen\, which was traditionally made of silk) onto a flat surface beneath using a squeegee.  Images are made by creating stencils that block some areas of the mesh\, while leaving other areas open for the ink to pass through\, resulting in a printed design.   \nParticipants will design and prepare vinyl stencils that they will attach to a silkscreen to print their own unique compositions onto paper. \nLinocut is a process where the surface of a linoleum plate is carved into using special tools to remove areas of the linoleum. The areas that are not removed result in a raised design. Ink is then applied to the surface design and printed onto paper either through pressure applied by hand or using a printing press.  \nParticipants will each carve and print a 4”x6” linocut plates by hand\, as well as by using a table-top relief press. \n  \nNo Experience Needed!!!\n  \nWhat’s included with your registration:\n\nA directed drypoint carving\, inking\, and printing session on 4 x 6″ plexiglas plates\nA demonstration on type setting\, followed by collaborating on a composition on the press\nPulling your own prints off the Nolan press with the assistance of staff\nDesigning and printing lino using a 4 x 6″ block\nScreen printing your own design using cut stencils\n\n  \nAll supplies are included! \n  \nEvent Registration Fee\n$135.00 \nprices not subject to GST \n\n  \nThis event includes all project supplies\, participants are recommended to prepare:\n\nImage ideas for drawing and carving\nBring reading glasses if you need them for fine work.\nWear suitable clothing for working with ink and/or a work apron.\nWear close toed shoes and avoid overly loose long sleeves.\nTie back long hair when operating machinery.\nPersonal PPE (if uncomfortable with Shared Studio PPE)\n\n\n  \nAdditional Notes: \n\nEvent limited to 20 Participants\nThis event is open to only participants of 18 years of age\n\n—————————————————————————\n\n  \nCode of Conduct:\nTo support an environment which promotes dignity and respect to all\, no form of intimidation\, bullying or harassment will be tolerated. Should this type of behaviour occur\, the A/P host and/or instructor reserves the right to remove any individuals from the workshop. \n  \nAccommodation & Diversity:\nPlease inform A/P of any accessibility barrier(s) that may prevent you from getting the full benefit of participating in this program. A/P will respond to any requests in a timely manner and will work to support you within our capacity. \nA/P is committed to diversity and equality to all in employment\, volunteerism and contractors irrespective of their gender\, race\, ethnic origin\, disability\, age\, nationality\, national origin\, sexuality\, religion or belief\, marital status and social class. \n  \nCancellation Policy:\nIf you have registered for a  class or workshop with A/P but are unable to attend\, we require that you notify us as soon as possible\, and no later than 7 days before the class or workshop to receive a full refund. SUMMARY:What the Stencil?!
DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nAre you interested in printmaking techniques that use photo-processes and stencils\, but want to branch away from digital image-making?\nThis workshop will get you creating stencils with your hands\, and thinking about image-development for your photolitho/silkscreen/cyanotype practice in a new\, tactile way.\nSo come prepared to say goodbye to half-tones and endless photoshop editing. Instead\, you’ll learn to use hands-on methods to translate textures\, drawings\, and other materials into intricate printmaking imagery.\nWith demonstrations and guidance from the instructor\, participants will spend the first week experimenting with a range of techniques\, and the second week diving deeper into their preferred methods to create their own stencils that can be used in upcoming printmaking projects.\nSome familiarity with how stencils work in one or more printmaking techniques is recommended but not required. \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nA brief overview of how stencils are used in various printmaking methods.\nDemonstrations using a variety of drawing\, painting\, and transfer techniques to develop stencils on transparent sheets including mylar\, tracing paper\, and washi paper. \nMethods for creating stencils that use the surface texture of objects and materials (including but not limited to fabric\, wood grain\, and botanicals). \nTroubleshooting considerations.\nConsultation and guidance for participants based on their own project ideas.\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nTracy Wormsbecker (she/her) is an arts administrator and printmaker living in Mohkinstsis/Calgary. SUMMARY:The Latest Edition: Senior Print Student Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Latest Edition presents print-based artworks created by a selection of senior students and recent graduates from Calgary’s two post-secondary arts universities: Alberta University of the Arts and the University of Calgary. \nThis exhibition showcases 9 emerging artists who use printmaking as a means of questioning and discovery. For each artist\, meaning emerges through process. Initial ideas\, images\, and concepts concerning nuanced themes of self\, interconnection\, and change have transformed slowly through the materiality\, repetition\, and layering that is characteristic of print media–allowing depth of understanding to surface. \nFrom the University of Calgary: Gabrielle Arrizza\, Aidan Dupuis\, Joshua Seguin\, and Míša Štorková. \nFrom Alberta University of the Arts: Leafa Christieson\, Dana Nell Doshewnek\, Kat King\, Naia Lisch\, and Dimitri Smith-Kac. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Pump Up the Volume
DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nHalftones – who needs ‘em!? Instead\, build your silkscreening know-how to create depth without using digital processes. \nThis workshop will cover a very brief refresher of the silkscreen process (such as coating and exposing your screen\, as well as registering and pulling your prints) before diving deep into hand-drawing and exposure techniques to help define volume in print. \nSkills learned will include creating stencils with rubylith (a specialized film used for various printing techniques)\, as well as developing tone through posterization – a process where you layer multiple exposures of hand-drawn stencils to create volume in your printed imagery. \nPlease note\, this course is intended for participants with a base-knowledge and some experience with screen printing who want to take their skills to the next step. This is an excellent follow up to our Intro to Screen Printing workshop\, or if you’re looking for a refresher after learning silkscreen basics in the past. \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nA brief refresher of the screen printing process\nAdvanced drawing techniques for silkscreen\nBuilding layers using rubylith film\nUsing floating stencils of newsprint to block out areas while printing\nPosterization through combining multiple exposures of the same image\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nJamie-Lee Girodat completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Lethbridge and a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Alberta.
