DESCRIPTION:About Print(ed) Word\nIn 2017\, A/P and Loft 112\, an artistic hub for writers and creatives to connect\, received funding support from Canada Council for the Arts to initiate Print(ed) Word – an interdisciplinary project that explored book-inspired relationships including art from text\, artist with writer\, and art book with reader/viewer. ​ \nThe result was a collaboration between 12 printmakers and 12 writers\, each paired to create a collaborative handmade artist book inspired from an existing text. DESCRIPTION:Collagraph is a collage-based printing technique which encourages participants to make soft textural images. \nThis process is loose and responsive. \nIn our workshop we will employ both dry and wet techniques to create imagery through textures. We will learn how to make collagraph imagery on plates\, and how to ink\, wipe\, and print our collagraphs. \nNo experience required. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nThe basics of how textured materials create tone\nHow to approach atmospheric imagery employing sandpaper\, cutting\, glue\, vinyl\, tape and fabric\nHow to ink plates with oil-based inks\nHow to print plates with an etching press\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nMorgan Melenka is a visual artist based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary). She uses architectural forms and materials to engage with history and place\, employing sculpture\, installation and printmaking. She teaches visual art and is a scenic painter for film and television. SUMMARY:Etching with BIG
DESCRIPTION:In this 2-weekend workshop\, Kate is delighted to share tips and methods of working with this versatile etching ground developed by Andrew Baldwin of Trefeglwys Studio in Wales. Participants will explore multiple methods to create line\, tone and texture\, etching on copper.  Then they’ll dive into printing their plates with colour\, using multiple approaches such as à la poupé\, viscosity\, as well as introducing blends with a tonal image. Students having prior experience with etching is recommended in this workshop. \nBaldwin Intaglio Ground or B.I.G. is an alternative to traditional solvent-based etching grounds\, having all qualities etchers know and love about hard ground\, soft ground and aquatint — minus the VOC’s.  Plus it’s super-easy to use!    \n  \nThe instructor will cover: \n\nExploring products and practices for a safe and sustainable printmaking studio\nUsing B.I.G. as a hard ground and soft ground\nUsing Coffee Lift as a Sugar Lift alternative\nUsing Aquatint techniques\nEtching copper using Ferric Chloride\nOperating our Studio presses\nExploring colour printmaking methods\, as we print copper plate etchings made during workshop\n\n  \nInstructor Bio \nHaving a huge curiosity with Intaglio printmaking\, Kate revels in the discoveries which come through etching with B.I.G.  Over the past three years Kate has had the privilege to work with Andrew Baldwin\, travelling to Trefeglwys Studio in Wales to take a workshop with Andrew in 2023\, and assisting Andrew in two workshops in western Canada in 2025. Over the past 11 years Kate has done artist residencies at Zea Mays Printmaking\, a studio dedicated to safe and sustainable practices\, located in Florence\, Massachusetts. She is founding member of the Alberta Printmakers Society (A/P) in Calgary where she is an active member and renter. She teaches Intaglio Workshops at A/P\, at the Society of Northern Alberta Print-Artists (SNAP) in Edmonton\, and with Print Artists North in Fort St. John. DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about the world of printmaking? \nIf you want to give it a go but have no idea where to start\, this workshop is for you! You will get a hands-on taste of FOUR unique techniques\, including screen printing\, drypoint\, linocut\, and typesetting on a Nolan Proof Press.  Come away with four unique prints! This course is a perfect choice for those beginning in print or want to dabble in different techniques as a lead-up for taking further courses that Alberta Printmakers offers.  \nThis workshop is for folks who are 18 years of age or older.  \nNo experience necessary and all supplies are provided.  \n  \nWhat is printmaking? \nPrintmaking includes a range of processes where ink is transferred from one surface (a matrix) to another (the substrate) to create an image. There are several printmaking techniques\, including silkscreen\, relief\, etching\, relief\, letterpress\, and lithography.  \nPrintmaking has been used for both artistic and commercial purposes for hundreds of years (books\, illustrations\, artworks\, newspapers\, posters\, textiles\, etc)\, and it continues to be a popular and versatile medium for artists who print on various surfaces\, such as paper\, fabric\, wood\, and metal. \n  \nAbout each technique that you’ll learn in this sampler:  \nDrypoint is a process where a sharp\, pointed tool is used to scratch a design into the surface of a matrix (often a copper or plexiglass plate). Ink is then applied to the plate and wiped off so that it remains only in the grooves before transferring the ink onto paper using a printing press that applies substantial pressure.  \nParticipants will create\, ink\, and print their own 4”x6” plexiglass drypoint plate.  \nTypesetting: before digital applications like Microsoft Word or InDesign\, compositions of text (as well as symbols\, fancy decorative ornaments\, and illustrations) were manually arranged and ‘set’ by placing movable physical pieces of ‘type’ onto a letterpress machine. The surface of the composed form is then inked and transferred onto paper.  \nParticipants will work in small groups to compose a line of text using wood type before printing the text using a Nolan Proof Press multiple times.  \nSilkscreen is a process where ink is pressed through the openings of a fine fabric mesh (the screen\, which was traditionally made of silk) onto a flat surface beneath using a squeegee.  Images are made by creating stencils that block some areas of the mesh\, while leaving other areas open for the ink to pass through\, resulting in a printed design.   \nParticipants will use pre-exposed stencils to print their own unique compositions onto paper. \nLinocut is a process where the surface of a linoleum plate is carved into using special tools to remove areas of the linoleum. The areas that are not removed result in a raised design. SUMMARY:Papermaking Basics
DESCRIPTION:This beginner- level course introduces participants to the fundamentals of hand papermaking\, from fibre preparation to forming and drying finished sheets. Working primarily with cotton pulp\, students will learn the basic tools\, materials\, and techniques used to make paper by hand\, including vat setup\, mould and deckle use\, sheet forming\, couching\, and drying. Emphasis is placed on understanding paper as a material through direct\, hands-on experience. No prior experience is required\, and the course is suitable for artists\, printmakers\, book artists\, and anyone interested in learning how to make paper by hand. \nDecorative techniques such as laminating\, shaped sheets\, and inclusions will also be introduced\, and participants are encouraged to bring found materials to experiment with. A basic Nepalese-style deckle box will be covered which allows for individual pulls of different coloured pulp\, combinations of fibres\, and the incorporation of found materials within a single sheet. \nBecause papermaking is a wet process\, participants should wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet and clothing that may get wet. DESCRIPTION:This workshop introduces participants to the technique of chine collé – a paper laminating technique specific to printmaking used to create spatial\, material\, and visual separation in printed works.  \nOver the course of a six-hour workshop\, participants will be shown various approaches to chine collé and will be given ample opportunity to actively practice\, play\, and experiment with the technique through a series of prescribed and self-determined exercises. \nParticipants should leave the workshop with a portfolio of chine collé experiments and a good foundation in the technique to allow for continued personal exploration.  \nExperience and understanding of basic printmaking is highly recommended for those interested in taking this workshop\, though it is not a necessity due to the technique being very accessible to all. DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nAre you curious about cyanotype and wondering what you can do with this magical medium? \nIn this workshop you will not only learn the basics of preparing\, exposing and developing your own cyanotypes\, but how to take them several steps further through toning\, bleaching\, and multiple exposures. \nDuring the first day of the workshop\, you’ll prepare cyanotype solution before applying it to paper\, and then expose your imagery using both the sun and exposure unit equipment to create several of your own prints. \nThen\, using dye baths and registration strategies for multiple exposures\, you’ll move beyond the quintessential cyanotype blue to achieve rich browns\, reds\, yellows\, and even some colour combinations on the same print! \nParticipants will gain the know-how and confidence to continue their cyanotype journey both at home or in a studio environment. \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nAn overview of the process’s origins and how it works\nPreparing cyanotype solution\nApplying cyanotype solution to paper\nVarious exposure techniques using both photographic negatives and other materials for image-development\nDeveloping the exposed image\nToning exposed cyanotype images to produce different colours\nDouble exposures and considerations for image-registration\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nTracy Wormsbecker (she/her) is an arts administrator and printmaker living in Mohkinstsis/Calgary. DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nLet us demystify stone lithography! A process that is more than 200 years old and uses an image drawn on a limestone to make hundreds of prints! In this process\, an image is drawn using greasy materials. You can even use butter! The painterly marks achieved are unmatched to other techniques. Lucky for us\, Alberta Printmakers is one of the few places in the province that offers lithography stones and equipment for use!  \nThis course is suitable for all levels with no prior experience needed. Participants will learn how to prepare\, draw\, etch\, and print a litho stone to make a small edition.  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nHow to prepare a grain\, level and prepare a litho stone\nDrawing techniques for lithography\nHow to etch a litho stone\nHow to prepare paper for registration\nHow to print a lithograph  properly using the press\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nJamie-Lee Girodat completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Lethbridge and a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Alberta. Her interest in genetics and mental health informs her practice in print media\, drawing\, and animation. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and has taught at the University of Alberta\, Mount Allison University\, University of Calgary and is currently teaching at Alberta University of the Arts. \nInstagram: @piddlepress |  Website: www.jamieleegirodat.com \n\nWorkshop Fee\n$385.00* prices not subject to GST \n*Access to using the A/P studio equipment\, including as a workshop participant\, requires an A/P membership. Membership fees can be applied directly to your workshop registration. \nAdditional Notes: \n\nClass limited to 5 Participants\nAdults 18+ Years Old\n\n\nCode of Conduct:\nTo support an environment which promotes dignity and respect to all\, no form of intimidation\, bullying or harassment will be tolerated. Should this type of behaviour occur\, the A/P host and/or instructor reserves the right to remove any individuals from the workshop. \nAccommodation & Diversity:\nPlease inform A/P of any accessibility barrier(s) that may prevent you from getting the full benefit of participating in this program.
