And in a bigger\, newer space! \nScreen printing (or silkscreen) is a printmaking technique where layers of ink are pulled through a mesh screen to create a wonderfully detailed image\, often with multiple layers of transparent ink interacting with one another. In this comprehensive workshop\, students will gain an understanding of the processes involved in creating a screen print on paper within a professional printmaking studio and will leave with the knowledge and experience required to produce work independently. \nThis course is suitable for all levels with no prior experience needed. \n\nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nBoth analogue and digital methods of creating stencilsCoating a screen with emulsion\nBurning the screen on the exposure unit\nMixing ink\nRegistering multiple layers\nPulling prints\nCleaning/ reclaiming screens\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nOriginally from Montreal Quebec\, Statz completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2000\, and received his Masters of Fine Arts degree in Print Media at Concordia University in 2008. SUMMARY:The Book of Fading Memories
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nGrowing up in Iran\, the highly political atmosphere of society and the constant turmoil in the region manifested themselves in Mohammad Tabesh’s memories. He remembers the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88\, including mass arrests of political activists\, widespread imprisonments and executions with no fair trial. The Orwellian censorship imposed on his generation and the continuous religious propaganda experienced throughout his early education have made him a vigilant observer of the intimate moments between horror and humour. As a storyteller\, he strives to find a common language to share the stories of resistance and perseverance.  \nIn this work\, The Book of Fading Memories\, Tabesh collects some of his memories of war\, violence and censorship into a hand-printed\, limited-edition artist’s book. Each story is told from two parallel viewpoints. While a poem portrays how he sees the event today\, an image illustrates his perspective as a child on the opposite page. Tabesh’s approach to writing poetry is brief and honest. By abandoning description and providing the essential elements\, he invites readers to envisage these memories through their own eyes. Broken verses encourage them to live the experience instead of merely reading the stories. Tabesh has developed a narrative visual language through tracing\, line drawing\, and a bande dessinée or graphic novel approach.  \nIn light of the recent women-led uprising in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini at the hands of the so-called Morality Police\, telling stories of trauma and resilience is more relevant than ever. \nThe creation of these works was supported by Access Copyright Foundation and the Canada Council for the Arts.  \n– Statement written in 2022 \nArtist Bio:  \nMohammad Tabesh (he/him) is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist whose work delves into the complexities of the human experience\, resistance\, and social change. Across various media\, including writing\, printmaking\, multimedia\, and sculpture\, Tabesh strives to convey profoundly human and universal stories. As an artist\, Tabesh is committed to using his work as a vehicle for social change\, encouraging viewers to engage with his pieces personally and creatively. With a unique ability to blend the personal and political\, his work offers a powerful commentary on the human condition. \nTabesh’s work has been recognized with several grants from the Canada Council for the Arts\, the Ontario Arts Council\, the Toronto Arts Council\, and the Access Copyright Foundation. An engineer-turned-artist\, he earned his BFA from OCAD University and was honoured as the recipient of the university’s Sculpture and Installation Medal in 2020. SUMMARY:Printmaking Sampler
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about the world of printmaking? \nIf you want to give it a go but have no idea where to start\, this workshop is for you! Located off-site at YWCA Calgary in Inglewood\, you will get a hands-on taste of FOUR unique techniques\, including screen printing\, drypoint\, linocut\, and typesetting on a Nolan Proof Press.  Come away with four unique prints! This course is a perfect choice for those beginning in print or want to dabble in different techniques as a lead-up for taking further courses that Alberta Printmakers offers.  \nThis workshop is for folks who are 18 years of age or older.  \nNo experience necessary and all supplies are provided.  \n  \nWhat is printmaking? \nPrintmaking includes a range of processes where ink is transferred from one surface (a matrix) to another (the substrate) to create an image. There are several printmaking techniques\, including silkscreen\, relief\, etching\, relief\, letterpress\,and lithography.  \nPrintmaking has been used for both artistic and commercial purposes for hundreds of years (books\, illustrations\, artworks\, newspapers\, posters\, textiles\, etc)\, and it continues to be a popular and versatile medium for artists who print on various surfaces\, such as paper\, fabric\, wood\, and metal. \n  \nAbout each technique that you’ll learn in this sampler:  \nDrypoint is a process where a sharp\, pointed tool is used to scratch a design into the surface of a matrix (often a copper or plexiglass plate). Ink is then applied to the plate and wiped off so that it remains only in the grooves before transferring the ink onto paper using a printing press that applies substantial pressure.  \nParticipants will create\, ink\, and print their own 4”x6” plexiglass drypoint plate.  \nTypesetting: before digital applications like Microsoft Word or InDesign\, compositions of text (as well as symbols\, fancy decorative ornaments\, and illustrations) were manually arranged and ‘set’ by placing movable physical pieces of ‘type’ onto a letterpress machine. The surface of the composed form is then inked and transferred onto paper.  \nParticipants will work in small groups to compose a line of text using wood type before printing the text using a Nolan Proof Press multiple times.  \nSilkscreen is a process where ink is pressed through the openings of a fine fabric mesh (the screen\, which was traditionally made of silk) onto a flat surface beneath using a squeegee.  Images are made by creating stencils that block some areas of the mesh\, while leaving other areas open for the ink to pass through\, resulting in a printed design.   \nParticipants will design and prepare vinyl stencils that they will attach to a silkscreen to print their own unique compositions onto paper. \nLinocut is a process where the surface of a linoleum plate is carved into using special tools to remove areas of the linoleum. The areas that are not removed result in a raised design. Ink is then applied to the surface design and printed onto paper either through pressure applied by hand or using a printing press.  \nParticipants will each carve and print a 4”x6” linocut plates by hand\, as well as by using a table-top relief press.  \n  \nNo Experience Needed!!!\n  \nWhat’s included with your registration:\n\nA directed drypoint carving\, inking\, and printing session on 4 x 6″ plexiglas plates\nA demonstration on type setting\, followed by collaborating on a composition on the press\nPulling your own prints off the Nolan press with the assistance of staff\nDesigning and printing lino using a 4 x 6″ block\nScreen printing your own design using cut stencils\n\n  \nAll supplies are included! \n  \nEvent Registration Fee\n$125.00 \nprices not subject to GST \n\n  \nThis event includes all project supplies\, participants are recommended to prepare:\n\nImage ideas for drawing and carving\nBring reading glasses if you need them for fine work.\nWear suitable clothing for working with ink and/or a work apron.\nWear close toed shoes and avoid overly loose long sleeves.\nTie back long hair when operating machinery.\nPersonal PPE (if uncomfortable with Shared Studio PPE)\n\n\n  \nAdditional Notes: \n\nEvent limited to 20 Participants\nThis event is open to only participants of 18 years of age\n\n—————————————————————————\n\n  \nCode of Conduct:\nTo support an environment which promotes dignity and respect to all\, no form of intimidation\, bullying or harassment will be tolerated. SUMMARY:The Nitty Gritty of Collagraph
DESCRIPTION:Collagraph is a collage-based printing technique which encourages participants to make soft textural images. \nThis process is loose and responsive. \nIn our workshop we will employ both dry and wet techniques to create imagery through textures. This one-day chine-collé workshop would be ideal for those with some prior printmaking experience\, who may have old etching plates they would like to revisit\, old proofs printed on washi paper\, monotypes\, or drawings rendered in oil-based inks. In this workshop\, students will learn how to chine-collé\, a process of printing on Japanese rice paper and bonding to a heavier substrate\, both with and without a press. DESCRIPTION:This Linocut Basics workshop will provide an introduction to linocut printmaking\, covering the fundamentals of design\, carving\, and printing. THE FIX-ITS is a parody performance\, and installation work assuming the characters of a multi-talented duo of contract workers who critique systems of oppression and misogyny within professional spaces through hard work\, physical labor and community care. Getting to work as THE FIX-ITS required the proper OHS approved signage\, designating spaces to be soft and silly with yourself. This installation is the accumulation of the FIX-ITS body of work and will consist of the quilted signage used in our FIX-ITS performances\, our constructed light box art crate signs\, screenprints\, and textile work. \nGeorgia Dawkin and Drew Pardy are the two halves of the friendship heart necklace that is HOT 4 THE MOMENT. A creative collective\, HOT 4 THE MOMENT developed as a way for Georgia Dawkin and Drew Pardy to combine common themes within their work\, and to provide a space for play within their art practices.  \nHOT 4 THE MOMENT has exhibited in Eastern Edge Gallery (NL)\, Neutral Ground Artist Run Centre (SK)\, designed sets for Lawnya Vawnya Music Festival (NL)\, and performed at CB Nuit (NL)\, and the Atlantic Arts Symposium (NB). They were the 2024 Elbow Room Artists in Residence at The Rooms (NL) and the VANL Emerging Artists of the Year in 2024. Both Georgia and Drew are currently based in St. John’s\, NL and have received their BFAs from Grenfell Campus\, Memorial University.

SUMMARY:Intro to Reduction Linocut
DESCRIPTION:This intro class to the reduction linocut technique will teach the basics of the process through the creation of a 3 layer reduction woodcut at the Alberta Printmakers studio over the course of four evening classes. \nThe reduction process is one way of introducing colour into the relief printing process without the necessity of having multiple blocks. SUMMARY:Intro to Reduction Linocut
DESCRIPTION:This intro class to the reduction linocut technique will teach the basics of the process through the creation of a 3 layer reduction woodcut at the Alberta Printmakers studio over the course of four evening classes. \nThe reduction process is one way of introducing colour into the relief printing process without the necessity of having multiple blocks. Students will be instructed on ways of designing imagery for reduction printing\, useful approaches to the carving process\, the use of a registration jig\, and finally the setting of the press and printing.  \nParticipants should leave the workshop with a small edition of reduction prints designed and printed by themselves as well as a good foundation in the technique to allow them to continue with their own personal explorations. \nSome prior experience with relief printmaking (linocut or woodcut) is an advantage to taking this workshop but is not a necessity. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nWhat should be considered when designing an image for the reduction process\nHow to transfer the image to the block\nThe basics of carving linoleum\nHow to achieve accurate registration for multiple layers of colour\nThe printing process\n\n  \nAbout the instructor:\nJonathan Creese is a Trinidadian artist\, currently living\, working\, and studying in Calgary AB. Being introduced to art primarily from the realm of printmaking\, his work uses the language and sensibilities of printmaking to highlight the realities of the cultural and socio political landscape of his homeland.
