SUMMARY:The Mountie in The Family
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition \nMy maternal grandfather was a Mountie. This photo of him on horseback\, dressed in his formal Canadian Mounted Police uniform\, represents such an iconic symbol for Canada. Having passed away in 1995 he would have been 106 years old this year\, as Canada turns 150. This artwork is an investigation into my own identity\, within Canadian culture\, and how my personal view on heritage\, lineage\, and nostalgia have played a part in the formation of this identity. \nArtist Bio: Kenzie Housego has always been drawn to found objects and imagery with a sense of history. Through her art\, she seeks to investigate societal narratives of a romanticized past as well as the narrative of objects. She often highlights contemporary modes of gender roles and beauty by reflecting on the symbolic or iconized within society. Housego holds a BFA in Print Media from the Alberta College of Art and Design and resides in Calgary Alberta.  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:About Print(ed) Word\nIn 2017\, A/P and Loft 112\, an artistic hub for writers and creatives to connect\, received funding support from Canada Council for the Arts to initiate Print(ed) Word – an interdisciplinary project that explored book-inspired relationships including art from text\, artist with writer\, and art book with reader/viewer. ​ \nThe result was a collaboration between 12 printmakers and 12 writers\, each paired to create a collaborative handmade artist book inspired from an existing text. DESCRIPTION:BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! \nThis intro to the reduction woodcut technique will teach the basics of the process through the creation of a 2 layer reduction woodcut at the Alberta Printmakers studio over 4 evenings. \nThe reduction process is a great way of introducing colour into your relief printing without the need to carve multiple blocks! You’ll be shown everything from designing your image\, to carving the block and finally setting the press and printing. \nNo experience required. \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nWhat should be considered when designing an image for the reduction process\nHow to transfer the image to the block\nThe basics of carving wood\nThe differences between carving wood and lino\nThe printing process\nHow to achieve accurate registration for multiple layers of colour\n\n \nAbout the instructor:\nMatt Dunlop is an English artist\, educator and printmaker based in Calgary and has a formal arts education from A.U. Bournemouth and the University of the Arts\, London.  He works in relief print\, primarily woodcut\, finding this ancient process to be the most enjoyable and natural way of translating the world around him into imagery. Screen printing (or silkscreen) is a printmaking technique where layers of ink are pulled through a mesh screen to create a wonderfully detailed image\, often with multiple layers of transparent ink interacting with one another. SUMMARY:Lodestone by Darian Goldin Stahl
DESCRIPTION:Lodestone exhibits our complex encounters with medicine in way that is inviting\, wonderous\, and enchanting. Lodestones are naturally occurring magnets\, a near-magical phenomenon that was eventually harnessed within biomedical imaging technologies like MRI machines \nLodestone does not necessarily depict a happy ending\, but a constant state of journeying and becoming. It is vital to introduce more complex and unsatisfying narratives of illness into oursociety. Neither triumphant nor tragic\, illness and disability are typical and valid ways of moving through the world. Presented as colorful and surreal prints with a hint of lore\, I aim for thisexhibition to take up the visual and material culture of medicine and re-present them with affirming sensibilities that centre the patient perspective. Although this work represents the experiences of a single woman\, opening the imagery through translations of printmaking makes space for anyone to relate to the tales within. \nDr. Darian Goldin Stahl is interdisciplinary printmaker working between topics of medicine\, disability\, and well-being. Her work is based on the lived experiences of her collaborating partner and sister\, Devan Stahl\, as well as her own recent experiences navigating healthcare systems while pursuing parenthood. Darian is a printmaking instructor at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna\, where she lives and works on the unceded traditional lands of the Syilx peoples. She is also a Research Associate at the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health. This unconventional mix of employment demonstrates her commitment to championing those who have been marginalized and othered in Western medical systems through advocacy\, research\, and art. \nAfter attaining a BFA in Printmaking from Indiana University Bloomington and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Alberta  that both engaged healthcare topics\, she then went on to achieve a research-creation PhD in Humanities from Concordia University in 2021 that investigated how artists’ books become multi-sensory archives of illness and disability. This work awarded Darian a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at the UNBC Northern Medical Program and Health Arts Research Centre\, where she works with patient groups to create artists’ books about their lived experiences within healthcare systems. Darian has exhibited her work all around the world\, but her most notable achievement was the acquirement of her entire suite of artist’s books by the acclaimed medical art institution\, the Wellcome Collection in London\, where her books continue to evoke health discourses with public audiences.

SUMMARY:The Nitty Gritty of Collagraph
DESCRIPTION:Collagraph is a collage-based printing technique which encourages participants to make soft textural images. \nThis process is loose and responsive. \nIn our workshop we will employ both dry and wet techniques to create imagery through textures. We will learn how to make collagraph imagery on plates\, and how to ink\, wipe\, and print our collagraphs. \nNo experience required. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nThe basics of how textured materials create tone\nHow to approach atmospheric imagery employing sandpaper\, cutting\, glue\, vinyl\, tape and fabric\nHow to ink plates with oil-based inks\nHow to print plates with an etching press\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nMorgan Melenka is a visual artist based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary). She uses architectural forms and materials to engage with history and place\, employing sculpture\, installation and printmaking. She teaches visual art and is a scenic painter for film and television.
