SUMMARY:The Mountie in The Family
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition \nMy maternal grandfather was a Mountie. This photo of him on horseback\, dressed in his formal Canadian Mounted Police uniform\, represents such an iconic symbol for Canada. Having passed away in 1995 he would have been 106 years old this year\, as Canada turns 150. This artwork is an investigation into my own identity\, within Canadian culture\, and how my personal view on heritage\, lineage\, and nostalgia have played a part in the formation of this identity. \nArtist Bio: Kenzie Housego has always been drawn to found objects and imagery with a sense of history. Through her art\, she seeks to investigate societal narratives of a romanticized past as well as the narrative of objects. She often highlights contemporary modes of gender roles and beauty by reflecting on the symbolic or iconized within society. Housego holds a BFA in Print Media from the Alberta College of Art and Design and resides in Calgary Alberta.  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:About Print(ed) Word\nIn 2017\, A/P and Loft 112\, an artistic hub for writers and creatives to connect\, received funding support from Canada Council for the Arts to initiate Print(ed) Word – an interdisciplinary project that explored book-inspired relationships including art from text\, artist with writer\, and art book with reader/viewer. ​ \nThe result was a collaboration between 12 printmakers and 12 writers\, each paired to create a collaborative handmade artist book inspired from an existing text. SUMMARY:Intro to Screen Printing on Fabric
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this workshop and discover the joy of textile screen printing! This beginner-friendly class will introduce you to essential silk screen printing techniques and give you hands-on experience printing with various inks on fabric. \nWe’ll guide you through the entire process\, from preparing a screen with photo emulsion to exposing it with different stencils and getting it ready for printing. With all the fundamental techniques covered\, you’ll be well-equipped to start your own textile printing projects. You’re also welcome to bring your own clothes or tote bags made from natural materials to print your designs on. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nUnderstanding your screen\, fabric\, and squeegee options\, so that you can make informed choices\nDemonstration of photo emulsion coating and exposure\nWhat to consider when designing imagery for printing on textiles and specific techniques for pulling prints on fabric\nA chance to try out some unusual inks and experimental processes\nMake prints that last! Xing is the recipient of grants and scholarships from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council\, which support her research exploring themes related to culinary cultures\, human connections\, and the transmission of traditions within immigrant families. Taking root at the intersection of reproductive justice and queer liberation\, No Place Like Homo draws on themes of choice\, loss\, intention\, and autonomy\, and questions what it means to “conceive of” in the context of conception itself. The exhibition explores contrasting desires for visibility and for safety\, offering a view that is both zoomed in and zoomed out\, tender\, lighthearted\, resolute\, and joyfully mundane. \nK Sarrantonio blends traditional and experimental screenprinting techniques to represent queer domesticity and genderqueer experience. Born in the Hudson Valley in Upstate New York\, K lives and works in Queens\, NY. DESCRIPTION:In this class\, students will learn the basics of linocut printmaking. The instructor will teach students about composition\, safe cutting techniques and how to pull prints. Also covered will be information about choosing tools\, ink and papers suitable for a wide range of projects. Picasso\, Degas\, Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya have all made famous works just with basic copper etching techniques! \nThis course will cover the fundamentals of etching\, including drypoint\, hardground and aquatint ground techniques. Participants will learn how to use a traditional 15th century style printing press\, to create their works. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nBrief history and relevance\nCopper plate preparation\, cutting\, bevelling\, sanding\, removing scratches\nDrypoint Technique\nCopper plate inking\, registration\, printing and press use\nHardground Etching Technique\nIntro to Aquatint\n\n  \nAbout the instructor:\nAlison has over a decade of experience in archival custom picture framing. She holds a BFA from the University of Regina and an MFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University. DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder how those beautifully illustrated old books were made? With all those fancy lines and cross hatching? Picasso\, Degas\, Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya have all made famous works just with basic copper etching techniques! \nThis course will cover the fundamentals of etching\, including drypoint\, hardground and aquatint ground techniques. Participants will learn how to use a traditional 15th century style printing press\, to create their works. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nBrief history and relevance\nCopper plate preparation\, cutting\, bevelling\, sanding\, removing scratches\nDrypoint Technique\nCopper plate inking\, registration\, printing and press use\nHardground Etching Technique\nIntro to Aquatint\n\n  \nAbout the instructor:\nAlison has over a decade of experience in archival custom picture framing. She holds a BFA from the University of Regina and an MFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University. SUMMARY:Chine Collé Secrets
DESCRIPTION:Take your prints to the next level! This one-day chine-collé workshop would be ideal for those with some prior printmaking experience\, who may have old etching plates they would like to revisit\, old proofs printed on washi paper\, monotypes\, or drawings rendered in oil-based inks. In this workshop\, students will learn how to chine-collé\, a process of printing on Japanese rice paper and bonding to a heavier substrate\, both with and without a press. Over the course of a single class\, Participants will extend their print knowledge as students will walk through the chine- collé process step-by-step to make unique works of art. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nOperating an etching press\nPaper selection \nMixing and applying rice paste\nCollage techniques \nHow to chine-collé at home \n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nMyken McDowell is an Edmonton-based visual artist and educator.
