SUMMARY:The Mountie in The Family
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition \nMy maternal grandfather was a Mountie. This photo of him on horseback\, dressed in his formal Canadian Mounted Police uniform\, represents such an iconic symbol for Canada. Having passed away in 1995 he would have been 106 years old this year\, as Canada turns 150. This artwork is an investigation into my own identity\, within Canadian culture\, and how my personal view on heritage\, lineage\, and nostalgia have played a part in the formation of this identity. \nArtist Bio: Kenzie Housego has always been drawn to found objects and imagery with a sense of history. Through her art\, she seeks to investigate societal narratives of a romanticized past as well as the narrative of objects. She often highlights contemporary modes of gender roles and beauty by reflecting on the symbolic or iconized within society. Housego holds a BFA in Print Media from the Alberta College of Art and Design and resides in Calgary Alberta.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Print(ed) Word
DESCRIPTION:About Print(ed) Word\nIn 2017\, A/P and Loft 112\, an artistic hub for writers and creatives to connect\, received funding support from Canada Council for the Arts to initiate Print(ed) Word – an interdisciplinary project that explored book-inspired relationships including art from text\, artist with writer\, and art book with reader/viewer. \nThe result was a collaboration between 12 printmakers and 12 writers\, each paired to create a collaborative handmade artist book inspired from an existing text. The public support\, dissemination\, and celebration of this collaborative project continues. \nThe full collection of Print(ed) Word artist books were permanently installed in Calgary’s landmark Central Library in November 2018\, which was followed by a series of public artists talks throughout 2019 and the development of a mini-documentary series that was publicly released in 2020.  Click on each of the artist books listed below to view each mini-documentary.  \nArtist/Writer pairs and their collaborations\n\nDeep Cold on 11A by Aritha van Herk (writer) and Eveline Kolijn (artist)\nWhen a Warm Wind Blows off the Mountains by Susan Calder (writer) and Sylvia Arthur (artist)\nMy Mother Closing the Mouth of the War by Richard Harrison (writer) and Barbara Sutherland (artist)\nHow to Build a Street Girl by Lee Kvern (writer) and Carole Bondaroff (artist)\nThe Hunters by Jani Krulc (writer) and Ryan Statz (artist)\nHymenoptera by Doug Neilson (writer) and Heather Huston (artist)\nRouleauville by Rona Altrows (writer) and Carolyn Qualle (artist)\nISOBARS by Weyman Chan (writer) and Kate Baillies (artist)\nSwimming with Sharks by Elena Schacherl (writer) and Heather Urness (artist)\nSaturday Afternoon at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede\, 1977 by Barb Howard (writer) and Sally Reesman (writer)\nThe Night Will Be Long But Beautiful: The Life and Death of Jeff Lakes by Erin Vance (writer) and Tim van Wijk (artist)\nMezzo Milimetro by Caitlynn Cummings (writer) and Wendy Tokaryk (artist)\n\n  \nAcknowledgements\nThe creation of this project was made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, the partnership between A/P and Loft 112\, with special thanks to Carrie Phillips-Kieser and Lisa Murphy Lamb and 24 participating artists and writers. \nThe permanent exhibition\, 2019 Salon Series\, and Print(ed) Word Documentary were made possible through the generous support of the J K L MacLachlan Family Foundation together with the Calgary Public Library Foundation and the Calgary Public Library.

SUMMARY:NOTICE ME!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Opening Reception and Artist Talk!\nWhen: Friday\, January 24th from 7-9pm at A/P.  The artist talk will begin at 7pm\, followed by the reception until 9pm. \nClick here for more reception info and to RSVP \nAbout the Exhibition\nGiving ourselves the space to be soft and silly during these times is a radical act and deserves some attention! HOT 4 THE MOMENT will be taking over the Alberta Printmakers Main Gallery with “NOTICE ME!”\, a printed and quilted construction site. THE FIX-ITS is a parody performance\, and installation work assuming the characters of a multi-talented duo of contract workers who critique systems of oppression and misogyny within professional spaces through hard work\, physical labor and community care. Getting to work as THE FIX-ITS required the proper OHS approved signage\, designating spaces to be soft and silly with yourself. This installation is the accumulation of the FIX-ITS body of work and will consist of the quilted signage used in our FIX-ITS performances\, our constructed light box art crate signs\, screenprints\, and textile work. \nArtist Statement: HOT 4 THE MOMENT uses printmaking\, performance\, textiles\, sculpture and video as tools to explore labour\, gender\, and friendship. Their work uses humor as a vessel for change and pop-culture as a language to explore difficult topics\, and to break down expectations of “women under the patriarchy”. This often looks at gendered labour and representation in the media. ‘NOTICE ME!”is a playful examination of gendered cultural and social labour norms. This body of work uses imagery of work sites and construction signage to consider what is traditionally valued as paid labour vs. what goes mostly unrecognized and underpaid moving through the world as both artists and women. With their first body of work as HOT 4 THE MOMENT\, Georgia and Drew use playfulness\, humour\, softness and collaboration as an act of resilience and protest against systems of oppression within professional spaces as THE FIX-ITS. Together\, they dissect these themes through dispersing labour and decentering oneself in practice. \nArtist Bios: Georgia Dawkin and Drew Pardy are the two halves of the friendship heart necklace that is HOT 4 THE MOMENT. A creative collective\, HOT 4 THE MOMENT developed as a way for Georgia Dawkin and Drew Pardy to combine common themes within their work\, and to provide a space for play within their art practices. HOT 4 THE MOMENT has exhibited in Eastern Edge Gallery (NL)\, Neutral Ground Artist Run Centre (SK)\, designed sets for Lawnya Vawnya Music Festival (NL)\, and performed at CB Nuit (NL)\, and the Atlantic Arts Symposium (NB). They were the 2024 Elbow Room Artists in Residence at The Rooms (NL) and the VANL Emerging Artists of the Year in 2024. Both Georgia and Drew are currently based in St. John’s\, NL and have received their BFAs from Grenfell Campus\, Memorial University. \n\n_________________________________\nVisitor Information:\nNew to the A/P space?
