DESCRIPTION:About Print(ed) Word\nIn 2017\, A/P and Loft 112\, an artistic hub for writers and creatives to connect\, received funding support from Canada Council for the Arts to initiate Print(ed) Word – an interdisciplinary project that explored book-inspired relationships including art from text\, artist with writer\, and art book with reader/viewer. ​ \nThe result was a collaboration between 12 printmakers and 12 writers\, each paired to create a collaborative handmade artist book inspired from an existing text. SUMMARY:Intro to Screen Printing
DESCRIPTION:It is back!! And in a bigger\, newer space! \nScreen printing (or silkscreen) is a printmaking technique where layers of ink are pulled through a mesh screen to create a wonderfully detailed image\, often with multiple layers of transparent ink interacting with one another. In this comprehensive workshop\, students will gain an understanding of the processes involved in creating a screen print on paper within a professional printmaking studio and will leave with the knowledge and experience required to produce work independently. \nThis course is suitable for all levels with no prior experience needed. \n\nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nBoth analogue and digital methods of creating stencilsCoating a screen with emulsion\nBurning the screen on the exposure unit\nMixing ink\nRegistering multiple layers\nPulling prints\nCleaning/ reclaiming screens\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nOriginally from Montreal Quebec\, Statz completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2000\, and received his Masters of Fine Arts degree in Print Media at Concordia University in 2008. SUMMARY:Intro to Reduction Linocut
DESCRIPTION:This intro class to the reduction linocut technique will teach the basics of the process through the creation reduction linocut at the Alberta Printmakers studio over the course of two classes. \nThe reduction process is one way of introducing colour into the relief printing process without the necessity of having multiple blocks. Students will be instructed on ways of designing imagery at 6 x 8″ for reduction printing\, useful approaches to the carving process\, the use of a registration jig\, and finally the setting of the press and printing.  \nParticipants should leave the workshop with a small edition of reduction prints designed and printed by themselves as well as a good foundation in the technique to allow them to continue with their own personal explorations. \nSome prior experience with relief printmaking (linocut or woodcut) is an advantage to taking this workshop but is not a necessity. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nWhat should be considered when designing an image for the reduction process\nHow to transfer the image to the block\nThe basics of carving linoleum\nHow to achieve accurate registration for multiple layers of colour\nThe printing process\n\n  \nAbout the instructor:\nJonathan Creese is a Trinidadian artist\, currently living\, working\, and studying in Calgary AB. Roberts\, Contact: Art and the Pull of Print \nSoot on the inside of a fireplace. Drops of candle wax on a dining table. A felt blanket draped over the armrest of a chair. Ashes! Ashes! is an exhibition grounded in the materials of charcoal\, beeswax\, paper and wool combined with printed gestures of cutting\, redrawing\, and wiping away. As I reflect on the 14 houses that I have moved in and out of over the last decade\, I turn to drawing as both an archival and speculative practice. The works exhibited here trace both real memories and imagined scenarios of these homes and the 25 people I shared them with\, manipulating the images through techniques of monotype\, collagraph\, and mokulito to reveal themes of comfort\, deterioration\, and repair. For myself and many of those closest to me\, our paths through the smog of urban housing precarity have been lined with neglectful landlords\, deteriorating architecture\, personal conflicts\, unpaid debts\, and threatening property managers. By sinking its teeth into moments in these spaces and the relationships made and lost in them\, Ashes! Ashes! wonders — with uncertainty\, grief\, and sometimes hope— what is left behind\, what do we take with us\, and where do we go from here? \nMargaret Joba-Woodruff is a visual artist whose practice employs an interdisciplinary approach to printmaking to consider the intersections of land\, body\, family\, memory\, and labour. After completing a BFA in Visual Art at the University of British Columbia in 2020\, she became a worker-owner of the Vancouver Artist Labour Union Cooperative before relocating to St John’s\, Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland) to spend a year in residence as the ‘22-’23 Don Wright Scholar at St Michael’s Printshop. SUMMARY:Intro to Reduction Linocut
DESCRIPTION:This intro class to the reduction linocut technique will teach the basics of the process through the creation reduction linocut at the Alberta Printmakers studio over the course of two classes. \nThe reduction process is one way of introducing colour into the relief printing process without the necessity of having multiple blocks. Should this type of behaviour occur\, the A/P host and/or instructor reserves the right to remove any individuals from the workshop. \nAccommodation & Diversity:\nPlease inform A/P of any accessibility barrier(s) that may prevent you from getting the full benefit of participating in this program. Registrants who cancel with 6 days or less notice will receive 50% of their registration fee. Once the class or workshop has begun\, A/P is unable to issue a refund as we are subject to a minimum enrolment in order to run. \nIf A/P cancels a course due to low enrolment\, notice will be given at least 72 hours in advance with a full refund issued. For classes cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances\, registrants will receive a full refund.
