SUMMARY:Print(ed) Word
DESCRIPTION:About Print(ed) Word\nIn 2017\, A/P and Loft 112\, an artistic hub for writers and creatives to connect\, received funding support from Canada Council for the Arts to initiate Print(ed) Word – an interdisciplinary project that explored book-inspired relationships including art from text\, artist with writer\, and art book with reader/viewer. \nThe result was a collaboration between 12 printmakers and 12 writers\, each paired to create a collaborative handmade artist book inspired from an existing text. The public support\, dissemination\, and celebration of this collaborative project continues. \nThe full collection of Print(ed) Word artist books were permanently installed in Calgary’s landmark Central Library in November 2018\, which was followed by a series of public artists talks throughout 2019 and the development of a mini-documentary series that was publicly released in 2020.  Click on each of the artist books listed below to view each mini-documentary.  \nArtist/Writer pairs and their collaborations\n\nDeep Cold on 11A by Aritha van Herk (writer) and Eveline Kolijn (artist)\nWhen a Warm Wind Blows off the Mountains by Susan Calder (writer) and Sylvia Arthur (artist)\nMy Mother Closing the Mouth of the War by Richard Harrison (writer) and Barbara Sutherland (artist)\nHow to Build a Street Girl by Lee Kvern (writer) and Carole Bondaroff (artist)\nThe Hunters by Jani Krulc (writer) and Ryan Statz (artist)\nHymenoptera by Doug Neilson (writer) and Heather Huston (artist)\nRouleauville by Rona Altrows (writer) and Carolyn Qualle (artist)\nISOBARS by Weyman Chan (writer) and Kate Baillies (artist)\nSwimming with Sharks by Elena Schacherl (writer) and Heather Urness (artist)\nSaturday Afternoon at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede\, 1977 by Barb Howard (writer) and Sally Reesman (writer)\nThe Night Will Be Long But Beautiful: The Life and Death of Jeff Lakes by Erin Vance (writer) and Tim van Wijk (artist)\nMezzo Milimetro by Caitlynn Cummings (writer) and Wendy Tokaryk (artist)\n\n  \nAcknowledgements\nThe creation of this project was made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, the partnership between A/P and Loft 112\, with special thanks to Carrie Phillips-Kieser and Lisa Murphy Lamb and 24 participating artists and writers. \nThe permanent exhibition\, 2019 Salon Series\, and Print(ed) Word Documentary were made possible through the generous support of the J K L MacLachlan Family Foundation together with the Calgary Public Library Foundation and the Calgary Public Library.

SUMMARY:Ashes! Ashes!
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAshes!Ashes! \n“Most prints are contact relics in this sense\, inasmuch as they are essentially stains on one surface that attest to damage done to another surface.”   \n– Jennifer L. Roberts\, Contact: Art and the Pull of Print \nSoot on the inside of a fireplace. Drops of candle wax on a dining table. A felt blanket draped over the armrest of a chair. Ashes! Ashes! is an exhibition grounded in the materials of charcoal\, beeswax\, paper and wool combined with printed gestures of cutting\, redrawing\, and wiping away. As I reflect on the 14 houses that I have moved in and out of over the last decade\, I turn to drawing as both an archival and speculative practice. The works exhibited here trace both real memories and imagined scenarios of these homes and the 25 people I shared them with\, manipulating the images through techniques of monotype\, collagraph\, and mokulito to reveal themes of comfort\, deterioration\, and repair. For myself and many of those closest to me\, our paths through the smog of urban housing precarity have been lined with neglectful landlords\, deteriorating architecture\, personal conflicts\, unpaid debts\, and threatening property managers. By sinking its teeth into moments in these spaces and the relationships made and lost in them\, Ashes! Ashes! wonders — with uncertainty\, grief\, and sometimes hope— what is left behind\, what do we take with us\, and where do we go from here? \nMargaret Joba-Woodruff is a visual artist whose practice employs an interdisciplinary approach to printmaking to consider the intersections of land\, body\, family\, memory\, and labour. After completing a BFA in Visual Art at the University of British Columbia in 2020\, she became a worker-owner of the Vancouver Artist Labour Union Cooperative before relocating to St John’s\, Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland) to spend a year in residence as the ‘22-’23 Don Wright Scholar at St Michael’s Printshop. Her work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and Arts NL\, and has been exhibited across Canada\, in the UK\, and Taiwan.  \nBorn in Montréal and raised on the island of Martha’s Vineyard\, Joba-Woodruff is once again living in Vancouver\, BC as a guest on the homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations after two meaningful years of living and working in Ktaqmkuk. \n\nRelated Events:\nOpening Reception:  \nJoin us for the opening reception on Friday\, February 20 from 7-9pm.  The artist will be in attendance and light refreshments will be served. \nAttendance is FREE and ALL ARE WELCOME. \nPrintmaking Demonstration and Artist Meet & Greet:  \nJoin us on Saturday\, February 21 from 1-2pm. \nMargaret Joba-Woodruff will be providing a live demonstration of Mokulito (wood lithography)\, and there will be an informal meet and greet with the artist and local community members. \nAttendance is FREE and ALL ARE WELCOME.  Registration is kindly requested. \n\n_________________________________\nVisitor Information:\nNew to the A/P space? SUMMARY:Printmaking Sampler
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about the world of printmaking? \nIf you want to give it a go but have no idea where to start\, this workshop is for you! You will get a hands-on taste of FOUR unique techniques\, including screen printing\, drypoint\, linocut\, and typesetting on a Nolan Proof Press.  Come away with four unique prints! This course is a perfect choice for those beginning in print or want to dabble in different techniques as a lead-up for taking further courses that Alberta Printmakers offers.  \nThis workshop is for folks who are 18 years of age or older.  \nNo experience necessary and all supplies are provided.  \n  \nWhat is printmaking? \nPrintmaking includes a range of processes where ink is transferred from one surface (a matrix) to another (the substrate) to create an image. There are several printmaking techniques\, including silkscreen\, relief\, etching\, relief\, letterpress\, and lithography.  \nPrintmaking has been used for both artistic and commercial purposes for hundreds of years (books\, illustrations\, artworks\, newspapers\, posters\, textiles\, etc)\, and it continues to be a popular and versatile medium for artists who print on various surfaces\, such as paper\, fabric\, wood\, and metal. \n  \nAbout each technique that you’ll learn in this sampler:  \nDrypoint is a process where a sharp\, pointed tool is used to scratch a design into the surface of a matrix (often a copper or plexiglass plate). Ink is then applied to the plate and wiped off so that it remains only in the grooves before transferring the ink onto paper using a printing press that applies substantial pressure.  \nParticipants will create\, ink\, and print their own 4”x6” plexiglass drypoint plate.  \nTypesetting: before digital applications like Microsoft Word or InDesign\, compositions of text (as well as symbols\, fancy decorative ornaments\, and illustrations) were manually arranged and ‘set’ by placing movable physical pieces of ‘type’ onto a letterpress machine. The surface of the composed form is then inked and transferred onto paper.  \nParticipants will work in small groups to compose a line of text using wood type before printing the text using a Nolan Proof Press multiple times.  \nSilkscreen is a process where ink is pressed through the openings of a fine fabric mesh (the screen\, which was traditionally made of silk) onto a flat surface beneath using a squeegee.  Images are made by creating stencils that block some areas of the mesh\, while leaving other areas open for the ink to pass through\, resulting in a printed design.   \nParticipants will design and prepare vinyl stencils that they will attach to a silkscreen to print their own unique compositions onto paper. \nLinocut is a process where the surface of a linoleum plate is carved into using special tools to remove areas of the linoleum. The areas that are not removed result in a raised design. Ink is then applied to the surface design and printed onto paper either through pressure applied by hand or using a printing press.  \nParticipants will each carve and print a 4”x6” linocut plates by hand\, as well as by using a table-top relief press. \n  \nNo Experience Needed!!!\n  \nWhat’s included with your registration:\n\nA directed drypoint carving\, inking\, and printing session on 4 x 6″ plexiglas plates\nA demonstration on type setting\, followed by collaborating on a composition on the press\nPulling your own prints off the Nolan press with the assistance of staff\nDesigning and printing lino using a 4 x 6″ block\nScreen printing your own design using cut stencils\n\n  \nAll supplies are included! \n  \nEvent Registration Fee\n$135.00 \nprices not subject to GST \n\n  \nThis event includes all project supplies\, participants are recommended to prepare:\n\nImage ideas for drawing and carving\nBring reading glasses if you need them for fine work.\nWear suitable clothing for working with ink and/or a work apron.\nWear close toed shoes and avoid overly loose long sleeves.\nTie back long hair when operating machinery.\nPersonal PPE (if uncomfortable with Shared Studio PPE)\n\n\n  \nAdditional Notes: \n\nEvent limited to 20 Participants\nThis event is open to only participants of 18 years of age\n\n—————————————————————————\n\n  \nCode of Conduct:\nTo support an environment which promotes dignity and respect to all\, no form of intimidation\, bullying or harassment will be tolerated. Should this type of behaviour occur\, the A/P host and/or instructor reserves the right to remove any individuals from the workshop. \n  \nAccommodation & Diversity:\nPlease inform A/P of any accessibility barrier(s) that may prevent you from getting the full benefit of participating in this program. A/P will respond to any requests in a timely manner and will work to support you within our capacity. \nA/P is committed to diversity and equality to all in employment\, volunteerism and contractors irrespective of their gender\, race\, ethnic origin\, disability\, age\, nationality\, national origin\, sexuality\, religion or belief\, marital status and social class. \n  \nCancellation Policy:\nIf you have registered for a  class or workshop with A/P but are unable to attend\, we require that you notify us as soon as possible\, and no later than 7 days before the class or workshop to receive a full refund.
