DESCRIPTION:About Print(ed) Word\nIn 2017\, A/P and Loft 112\, an artistic hub for writers and creatives to connect\, received funding support from Canada Council for the Arts to initiate Print(ed) Word – an interdisciplinary project that explored book-inspired relationships including art from text\, artist with writer\, and art book with reader/viewer. ​ \nThe result was a collaboration between 12 printmakers and 12 writers\, each paired to create a collaborative handmade artist book inspired from an existing text. SUMMARY:Expressions in Print: Linocut
DESCRIPTION:The creative process involves engaging with the world around you\, and transforming your interpretations into individual expression. \nDuring July and August 2026\, 9 local youth explored tactile printmaking techniques to interpret their world through art. Using linocut and monotype\, they translated ideas\, images\, and materials that inspire them into their own forms of expressive mark-making. \nEach of their artworks will be featured in the Crescent Heights Mini Galleries in 2 consecutive exhibitions. DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nPhotolithography is a technique perfect for anyone interested in photography or drawing in printmaking. This course will cover a range of possibilities to transform photographs\, digital creations\, or drawn material into richly detailed lithographs. Participants will learn to process a photosensitive plate\, exposing it to light to develop a printable image. \nThis course is suitable for all levels with no prior experience needed. \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nHow to prepare a photographic file for lithography printing in photoshop\nHow to make drawings that will expose for photolithography plates\nHow to develop a photolithography plate\nHow to prepare paper for registration\nHow to print a photolithograph plate properly using the press\n\n\nAbout the instructor:\nJamie-Lee Girodat completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Lethbridge and a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Alberta. DESCRIPTION:In this 2-weekend workshop\, Kate is delighted to share tips and methods of working with this versatile etching ground developed by Andrew Baldwin of Trefeglwys Studio in Wales. Participants will explore multiple methods to create line\, tone and texture\, etching on copper.  Then they’ll dive into printing their plates with colour\, using multiple approaches such as à la poupé\, viscosity\, as well as introducing blends with a tonal image. Students having prior experience with etching is recommended in this workshop. \nBaldwin Intaglio Ground or B.I.G. is an alternative to traditional solvent-based etching grounds\, having all qualities etchers know and love about hard ground\, soft ground and aquatint — minus the VOC’s.  Plus it’s super-easy to use! \n \nWhat you’ll learn: ​​​​\n\nExploring products and practices for a safe and sustainable printmaking studio\nUsing B.I.G. as a hard ground and soft ground\nUsing Coffee Lift as a Sugar Lift alternative\nUsing Aquatint techniques\nEtching copper using Ferric Chloride\nOperating our Studio presses\nExploring colour printmaking methods\, as we print copper plate etchings made during workshop\n\n  \nAbout the instructor:\nHaving a huge curiosity with Intaglio printmaking\, Kate revels in the discoveries which come through etching with B.I.G.  Over the past three years Kate has had the privilege to work with Andrew Baldwin\, travelling to Trefeglwys Studio in Wales to take a workshop with Andrew in 2023\, and assisting Andrew in two workshops in western Canada in 2025. Over the past 11 years Kate has done artist residencies at Zea Mays Printmaking\, a studio dedicated to safe and sustainable practices\, located in Florence\, Massachusetts. She is founding member of the Alberta Printmakers Society (A/P) in Calgary where she is an active member and renter. She teaches Intaglio Workshops at A/P\, at the Society of Northern Alberta Print-Artists (SNAP) in Edmonton\, and with Print Artists North in Fort St. John. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this workshop and discover the joy of textile screen printing! This beginner-friendly class will introduce you to essential silk screen printing techniques and give you hands-on experience printing with various inks on fabric. \nWe’ll guide you through the entire process\, from preparing a screen with photo emulsion to exposing it with different stencils and getting it ready for printing. With all the fundamental techniques covered\, you’ll be well-equipped to start your own textile printing projects. SUMMARY:Printmaking Sampler
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about the world of printmaking? \nIf you want to give it a go but have no idea where to start\, this workshop is for you! You will get a hands-on taste of FOUR unique techniques\, including screen printing\, drypoint\, linocut\, and typesetting on a Nolan Proof Press.  Come away with four unique prints! This course is a perfect choice for those beginning in print or want to dabble in different techniques as a lead-up for taking further courses that Alberta Printmakers offers.  \nThis workshop is for folks who are 18 years of age or older.  \nNo experience necessary and all supplies are provided.  \n  \nWhat is printmaking? \nPrintmaking includes a range of processes where ink is transferred from one surface (a matrix) to another (the substrate) to create an image. There are several printmaking techniques\, including silkscreen\, relief\, etching\, relief\, letterpress\, and lithography.  \nPrintmaking has been used for both artistic and commercial purposes for hundreds of years (books\, illustrations\, artworks\, newspapers\, posters\, textiles\, etc)\, and it continues to be a popular and versatile medium for artists who print on various surfaces\, such as paper\, fabric\, wood\, and metal. \n  \nAbout each technique that you’ll learn in this sampler:  \nDrypoint is a process where a sharp\, pointed tool is used to scratch a design into the surface of a matrix (often a copper or plexiglass plate). Ink is then applied to the plate and wiped off so that it remains only in the grooves before transferring the ink onto paper using a printing press that applies substantial pressure.  \nParticipants will create\, ink\, and print their own 4”x6” plexiglass drypoint plate.  \nTypesetting: before digital applications like Microsoft Word or InDesign\, compositions of text (as well as symbols\, fancy decorative ornaments\, and illustrations) were manually arranged and ‘set’ by placing movable physical pieces of ‘type’ onto a letterpress machine. The surface of the composed form is then inked and transferred onto paper.  \nParticipants will work in small groups to compose a line of text using wood type before printing the text using a Nolan Proof Press multiple times.  \nSilkscreen is a process where ink is pressed through the openings of a fine fabric mesh (the screen\, which was traditionally made of silk) onto a flat surface beneath using a squeegee.  Images are made by creating stencils that block some areas of the mesh\, while leaving other areas open for the ink to pass through\, resulting in a printed design.   \nParticipants will use pre-exposed stencils to print their own unique compositions onto paper. \nLinocut is a process where the surface of a linoleum plate is carved into using special tools to remove areas of the linoleum. The areas that are not removed result in a raised design. SUMMARY:Papermaking Basics
DESCRIPTION:This beginner- level course introduces participants to the fundamentals of hand papermaking\, from fibre preparation to forming and drying finished sheets. Working primarily with cotton pulp\, students will learn the basic tools\, materials\, and techniques used to make paper by hand\, including vat setup\, mould and deckle use\, sheet forming\, couching\, and drying. Emphasis is placed on understanding paper as a material through direct\, hands-on experience. No prior experience is required\, and the course is suitable for artists\, printmakers\, book artists\, and anyone interested in learning how to make paper by hand. \nDecorative techniques such as laminating\, shaped sheets\, and inclusions will also be introduced\, and participants are encouraged to bring found materials to experiment with. A basic Nepalese-style deckle box will be covered which allows for individual pulls of different coloured pulp\, combinations of fibres\, and the incorporation of found materials within a single sheet. \nBecause papermaking is a wet process\, participants should wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet and clothing that may get wet. SUMMARY:Intro to Reduction Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:This intro class to the reduction woodcut technique will teach the basics of the process over the course of two classes. \nThe reduction process is one way of introducing colour into the relief printing process without the necessity of having multiple blocks.
