This Linocut Basics workshop will provide an introduction to linocut printmaking, covering the fundamentals of design, carving, and printing. Activities during the workshop will get students familiar with the process, while focusing on safe carving technique, image design and mark-making.

Over the course of the day, participants will develop an image, transfer and carve it into a lino block, and print a small edition of single-color prints. Students will finish the workshop with their carved block and set of original prints, along with the foundational  knowledge needed to independently continue linocut printmaking.

What you’ll learn:
  • What should be considered when designing an image for the relief printing process
  • How to transfer the image to the block
  • The basics of carving linoleum safely and efficiently
  • Techniques for dynamic mark making and texture in monochromatic linocut prints
  • The inking and printing process
  • How to setup and use a printing press for relief
  • How to clean and care for linocut tools and equipment
  • Discussion on continuing printmaking independently, including tools to get started and considerations for materials and workspace

About the instructor:

I am an artist living and working in Calgary, Alberta. My work is primarily nature-themed, featuring birds and plants. My art  is endlessly inspired by my experiences of the beautiful landscapes around me, and I strive to capture a sense of the wonder I feel in nature in my prints. I primarily work in linocut, but often combine techniques such as linocut, silkscreen and watercolor on paper.
