Growing up in Iran, the highly political atmosphere of society and the constant turmoil in the region manifested themselves in Mohammad Tabesh’s memories. He remembers the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88, including mass arrests of political activists, widespread imprisonments and executions with no fair trial. The Orwellian censorship imposed on his generation and the continuous religious propaganda experienced throughout his early education have made him a vigilant observer of the intimate moments between horror and humour. As a storyteller, he strives to find a common language to share the stories of resistance and perseverance.

DATE: Saturday, September 13 (single day event)
TIME: 10:00am-1pm, 2pm-5pm
Want to learn more about the world of printmaking? If you want to give it a go but have no idea where to start, this workshop is for you! You will get a hands-on taste of FOUR unique techniques, including screen printing, drypoint, linocut, and typesetting on the Nolan Press. Come away with four unique prints! This course is a perfect choice for those beginning in print or want to dabble in different techniques as a lead-up for taking further courses that Alberta Printmakers offers.
This workshop will be split into two groups, working on two different techniques simultaneously. In the morning, from 10:00am-1:00pm, we will cover drypoint and letterpress. Drypoint is an intaglio process in which a design is drawn on a plate with a sharp, pointed needle-like instrument. Ink is pressed into the grooves, the plate is wiped and then printed to reveal a positive image with intricate linework. In letterpress, small groups will work together to compose a text-based image that can be quickly printed in multiples.
In the afternoon, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, participants will make silkscreen and linocut prints. For silkscreen, participants will cut stencils to attach to the screen and print their own unique compositions.

"...Via this work, I interweave the personal and political, to strengthen local-global perspectives of colonization's impact. I share my family’s stories as a frame through which we can better understand one another as different peoples connected through shared struggles—and shared imaginings for something beyond what our stories seem to be."
